Board meetings are held in the SVL Lobby Conference Room 017, on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:00 PM. All members are welcome. [Temporarily in SVL Conference Room H227, probably through December.] General meetings are held at the SVL Cafeteria on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:00 PM.  All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Due to a last minute cancellation, Walt Cole has agreed to do a "show and tell" of IrfanView. It is an easy to use, fast, freeware photo display program. Functions include photo viewing, viewing thumbnails, slide show creation, photo printing, screen or window capture to a photo file, some photo editing capabilities and other photo management functions. If you have a CD writer, you can create a slide show CD. Let's show Walt our appreciation for his filling in, with a good crowd for his demo. See you there!

Ray Champlin, IBM Microdrive Solutions Architect, will give a presentation on the world's smallest and lightest disk drive, the one inch IBM Microdrive, originated in IBM Research. The Microdrive brings the high capacity and performance of disk storage to the world of handheld devices and laptops. With capacity and data rate significantly greater than is available in solid state flash memory, the Microdrive stores more pictures in digital cameras, more music in MP3 players, and more data files in handheld PCs than previously possible. Ray Champlin will give demos with lots of devices that utilize the IBM Microdrive. Be sure to attend this great meeting!

Martin Liss from Siemens will explain the features of Visual Basic. Visual Basic is a rapid application development language which uses built in and ActiveX controls to perform functions such as inputting parameters, using pull down menus and displaying lists with a minimum of programming. He will demonstrate the capabilities of Visual Basic used in conjunction with Access (Microsoft's database application) to build a sample application that is useful in the home. Sebastian Frey, 4D's Web Development Tools Evangelist. will be giving a presentation on 4D's Web Development Tools. Sebastian will begin with an overview of 4D as a web application platform and go on to detail why 4D offers a superior paradigm for such applications. The presentation will include a demonstration of the 4D product line in action and will conclude with a question and answer session. Peter Hirsch, founding member of the Mountain View IBM PC Club will provide clarity and insight into Broadband and GPS operation. His timely presentation on Broadband will include a discussion of various broadband connection options for high speed home Internet use and a video of the use of the Sprint Broadband high speed wireless Internet connection. His Global Positioning Systems presentation will include a general discussion of Global Positioning Systems and a video on the use of the new Garmin StreetPilot III with auto-route navigation and voice  commands. Bill Herrington, is a retired IBM'er, a long time PC Club member, an IRS Enrolled Agent, a Professional Tax Preparer and a SeniorNet of San Jose volunteer Instructor of Quicken 2001 courses. He will demonstrate this most popular home finance program of the day, Quicken 2001. Some of the covered topics include banking, bill paying, investment tracking/planning & reporting, income versus expenses analysis and tracking & analyzing your 401(k) holdings.  Very informative. Hal Turk, HTML instructor for Museum Docents and a Club member, will give a presentation on some of the fundamentals of HTML, which is a fairly user friendly formatting markup language for Web authoring. The presentation will consist of demonstrating the use of tags and attributes on a simple set of text arranged in paragraphs and list items. Also, the use of images will be included, but tables will not be presented. There will be references to a book for fill in and expansion. Because of the time constraints, a follow up session will be made in January 2002 to discuss tables and links, as well as to answer questions after members have tried to construct HTML pages of their own. DeForrest Home, a Club member who attended Comdex, will give a short presentation during the information exchange on what he learned at Comdex. Nominations and elections of PC Club Officers for 2002 will be followed by a buffet. The current slate of candidates is: Walt Cole for President, Russ Munch for Vice-President, Peter Lee for Treasurer and Jack Stallard for Secretary. Please come out and vote and consider making other nominations. If you do not wish to become an officer, consider volunteering for one of the other positions shown at this site.
