Shirley S. Allen

Shirley S. Allen was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and graduated from Oak Park High School. She received a B.A. from Carleton College and a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr. Married to Archibald W. Allen, a professor of classics, she brought up three children before becoming a professor of English at the University of Connecticut. Among her scholarly publications are a book on the production of Shakespearean drama and an article on Shakespearean performances in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. She is a great-granddaughter of Roxanna Britton.
